Tutorials for Tutors

The following tutorials guide you through how to complete certain administrative tutor tasks on Birley Place.

You may find the glossary useful for some of the terms we use on the website.

If you have any questions or you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss your ideas for using Birley Place please get in touch with Eleanor Hannan E.Hannan@mmu.ac.uk.

Before you can complete this task you will need to know:

  • the name of your syllabus
  • Your group name

Assignment: Any content/task you set for your students. This can be a Profile, Scenario, or Learning Package.

Group: a collection of users under the same unit or project.

Group login: One single username and password used by the whole group. No individual user data is available with a group login.

Individual logins: Each student has their own account, usually based on their student email address. Individual usage data can be collected with individual logins.

Learning Package: A short course consisting of one or more pages, linking to Birley Place content and other learning materials.

Profile: Each simulated person on Birley Place has a Profile. It is a description of their life and shows any social connections they may have, where they live, and any Scenarios they are linked to.

Places: A page for services, public places, homes, green spaces, businesses within the virtual community. Many of them can be found on the Map, but they are not limited to this.

Scenarios: Linked to Profiles and/or Places, scenarios are like instances in the life of the simulated person/s e.g. the visit to the health centre, the meeting with the SENCO, the activity students need to prepare for etc. They can involve multiple people and take place anywhere in the community. As well as text we can embed videos and other interactive content.

Syllabus: A list of all the content set as assignments for a group of students. We use syllabuses to pull usage data about those specific pages for a specific group.
